Grid + Grain Architects is a York based practice, specialising in education, ecclesiastical and residential architecture. Designing spaces for people is at the heart of everything we do, which is underpinned by our three core values.
1 - Explore
Exploration is key to a successful design. We start off every process by exploring the brief, pushing it to its limit to uncover the essence of the project. We explore form, space, light and movement.
2 - Play
It is our belief that architecture can be fun and playful. Spaces should bring joy, enabling learning, relaxation or spiritual calm. Architecture can bring people together and be so much more than building.
3 - Make
We pride ourselves on delivering complete projects, through working with other consultants, liaising with statutory bodies and managing the construction process. We aim to remove as much of the stress and drudgery of a construction project as possible.

DirectorAfter studying at Manchester School of Architecture, I worked in Nottingham and Birmingham for over a decade, specialising in heritage and residential projects, before relocating to York. I particularly enjoy the challenges of reusing and reordering historic buildings, and believe it is essential to work with existing fabric for the contextual, heritage and sustainable benefits it affords. There is a varied and interesting built environment, that can be reworked to create exciting and inspirational spaces for people.
